Your workshop host: Jemma Watts

In recent years I have been hosting photography workshops, both online and in person, teaching people how to use their camera or phone and explore their creative image making. It gives me so much pleasure to see that moment when my students suddenly understand how to achieve depth of field, or even master full manual mode on their camera.

I run a variety of photography workshops and courses to suit different needs. These include understanding Manual mode on a DSLR, food photography for foodies, the fundamentals of taking a good photo, and photography for small business owners. I generally teach groups of individuals with an interest in photography and business owners. I also offer one-to-one sessions too.

I started teaching photography by accident really. A few years ago I was asked by Ruthie Rogers, who owns the River Café in London, if I would teach her son photography.

I even had the pleasure of travelling to Tuscany teaching how to use a DSLR camera and received amazing feedback that I had inspired a new direction in someone through photography. After returning from Italy he took up photography seriously and started a job with a local newspaper and was also photographing parties and events.

This was a life changing moment for me too, I discovered how great it was to teach!

The first time I thought about teaching business owners was when social media really started to take over the world! I had many fantastic clients who produced or created amazing products but their own pictures that they were posting on their blogs, Facebook or Instagram were awful! The photos were diluting their brand and definitely did not portray the quality of their products or service. I understand that small businesses can’t afford a professional photographer every time they need photos, so I decided to teach them how to improve their own photography.

By pooling all my knowledge gained over the last 15 years, I can help small, independent business owners understand the importance of, and how to create, a consistent visual style for their brands and how to connect with their customers, which ultimately results in a higher volume of sales! Great images have a huge impact on whether a customer buys from you or employs your services. In today’s world of digital marketing, images are often the first thing that clients and customers see, and you only have a few seconds to grab their attention. It is therefore extremely important that businesses consistently produce captivating images.

As well as my own workshop, I work closely with 91 Magazine, a beautiful independent magazine, who I also shoot for, running workshops for small creative businesses, either held by 91 Magazine or by invitation from event organisers. In recent times I have also been invited to run webinars for business networking groups and appearing on Facebook groups as a guest speaker.
