Food Photography: A visit to one of the UK’s biggest food festivals

September means Harvest Festival to us here in the UK, it is also the season for many food festivals and Aldeburgh in Suffolk hosts one of the biggest in the UK. Many local producers come here to sell their produce and whilst shopping you can taste many cuisines from local businesses, listen to talks, attend cooking demonstrations given by some of the top chefs in the country and also attend interesting masterclasses. This is every food lover’s dream event!

Photographing Food Masterclass

At this year’s festival, which is on 25th and 26th September 2021, I will be running a food photography workshop with Maria Elia, a renowned chef and author. I will be teaching people how to take great photos using their phone and Maria will be providing dishes for us to photograph, prepared with seasonal food supplied by local producers.

Top Tip: Most food we eat is beige! Add colour to your image with herbs as garnish, a colourful plate or bowl, textured background props.

Reportage photography at the event

When visiting an event this can be a great opportunity for some reportage photography, capturing the atmosphere as well as the details around the festival.

Top Tip: Imagine you are invisible! Don’t be afraid of taking the photo but also be polite and ask if taking portraits.
