Interiors Photography
After a lifetime obsession with homes and interiors, it only seemed natural that I would take my photography into this area. Not only do I like how a home looks, I’m also interested in the architecture, the owners and all the homeware contents too!
The photographers who inspired me
One of my early influencers in this area of photography is the interior and architectural photographer, Julius Shulman, a post World War 2 photographer, capturing mid-century Californian modernism and the style and design during the age of Mad Men. His work is all about post-war optimism and American glamour. He was one of the first interior photographers to use people in his photos to tell the narrative of the space. I also like to use people, or the hint of a person using the room, for this very same reason. I am also obsessed with finding a bungalow that I can renovate in this Californian style!
I have had the honour of meeting one of the worlds most celebrated and successful architects of our time, Sir Richard Rogers. I taught his son photography for many years (see my Workshop section of this website), and whilst doing so was a regular visitor to his incredible family home in Chelsea, London. For a few years I was invited out to their summer holiday residence in Tuscany, Italy, to continue teaching their son. On a number of occasions, Richard would accompany us on our photography trips to neighbouring towns, and I had the amazing privilege of being given a personal tour of the towns’ architecture. Two particular trips are embedded in my memory, and these are when we visited the town of Sienna and the Cathedral in Orvietto. How many people in the world can say Sir Richard Rogers accompanied them around these historical places and were given a personal education of the architecture by the great man himself?! I’m an extremely lucky lady!
My Clients
Over the years I have been commissioned to photograph many beautiful homes, which are featured in some of the top magazines in the UK, Ireland and around Europe. These include 91 Magazine, House and Home, House Beautiful, KBB, 25 Beautiful Homes, Real Homes, Home Style, Metro Newspaper, Mollie Makes and more. I also shoot homes for interior designers who have taken on a property and completely transformed it. It is fascinating walking into a home and photographing how it is lived in and the story it can tell the viewer.
Photographing homeware for brands is another huge part of my work. The big brands include 3M and Hillary’s Blinds, as well as many smaller brands for makers and designers. This type of work involves working as a team with stylists, set builders and the brand managers, where our collective skills come together to produce work that is on brand for the product.
My Style
My photography style is to convey the narrative of the homes and products that I shoot. Each room should flow to the next and bring together a cohesive collection of images. When styling products for brands, this same concept can be employed, to give the products a sense of place in the home and in our lives. I shoot with natural light and like to bring in lots of texture where possible, and I love the mix of old and new.
“Jemma was an absolute joy to work with, demonstrating consummate professionalism, a calm head and a positive, can-do attitude.”
